The idea for FlightGear began online in 1996 and used custom 3D graphics programming. Curtis Olson led the effort to develop an OpenGL-based version beginning in 1997.

Other open-source resources that FlightGear used were the NASA LaRCsim flight model and publicly accessible elevation data.  Years of dedicated work on newer iterations produced increasingly sophisticated and stable versions. The group started releasing new beta versions on a regular basis in 2001. By 2005, the program had matured enough to receive more reviews and gain more traction. 2007 saw the official end of beta development with the publication of ten years after FlightGear’s initial release in 1997, of version 1.0.0.
